MightyAdsense – Automatically Inject Ads

The MightyAdsense Plugin has many useful options. You can store up to 10 different sets of ads for various locations on your blog. You can insert them into your template by calling one simple function instead of having to paste entire code snippets for the ads. Since all your code for the ads are stored in WordPress, it makes changing the format of an ad a breeze.

But here’s where the magic comes in. You can chose certain ads to be automatically inserted into posts and pages. One your homepage, category list, etc; where you list many different posts on one page, you can chose to insert specific ads into certain ads on the page. Namely the first, second, and third posts. This is the set up I have for my first post:

The second post I leave blank, but have the following on the third:

Now this is what I have on every page/post:

PayPerPost Says No Ads

PayPerPost has recently modified their Terms of Service:

Inline Ads and Links. There are to be no third party links, ads or other detractors located within the sponsored post.

Now this has seriously thrown a kink into my normal blogging activity. I guess I could change the tight of ad or change the placement of the ad. But over time I’ve come to realize that this in post block ad is the highest paying ad on my site. It makes sense, since the ad is directly related to the post it is in. MightyAdsense currently has no option to manually exclude certain posts from having ads. So it’s all or nothing, Google Adsense or PayPerPost. Why can’t we have the best of both worlds? Well now you can!

Solution: MightyAdsense Hack – Automatically Exclude Certain Categories

Now, as you can tell, I’m a big fan of the whole automatic thing, but it does take a little bit homework.

Ensure that all PayPerPost posts are in a particular category.
My posts are always in the category: Sponsored Posts.

Find the Category ID
Go to the Manage menu in your WordPress administrator menu, click Categories, then find the ID in the, um…well, ID column.

Administer the MightyAdsense Hack
Open up the MightyAdsense plugin in a text editor. We’re looking in the area of line 373 (ver. 4.1. Yours might vary) for the following function:

function mightyadsense_generateads($content)

This function starts with the code to insert the ads into a single post:

if (is_single())

. So, again we’re looking around line 385:

//reach the right assignment.
$adsstr=getAds($p,$content);
//exit the loop
$p=1000;
$mai=1000;

This is what actually ads the ad code. Around the above code we add the following:

if (!in_category(9))    // PayPerPost Hack
{
$adsstr=getAds($p,$content);
//exit the loop
$p=1000;
$mai=1000;
}

Now, I think you can follow me here. My Sponsored Post category id is 9. So we’re saying “insert this ad everywhere except in posts with category ID 9″.

Now obviously, there are some disadvantages to this. You need to edit the code for each different blog you own. What would be ideal is if you could add some option to the plugin where you user could select the category they wish to exclude. But, I’m not a WordPress plugin creator and I did this on my lunch hour.

This way we keep ads out of certain posts and keep PayPerPost happy and still have ads in the rest of our posts. I hope this helps the masses out there.

In the world of web design you often come across people who don’t exactly know what they want. And that is usually a good thing for you because you can then charge them for the minimum and increase based on “added features”, which they should have seen up front, but they don’t always. This has the slight problem of having a contract with an indefinite time period.

A time period is usually scheduled for delivery of the product in the contract. This ensures the buyer that the product will be delivered in a reasonable time frame so that you don’t keep extending the job for not real reason. One thing I’ve learnt, however, is that you need to also specify a time frame that the user has to review the work and ensure that everything is to his liking. You absolutely need this if you’re not charging by the hour.

This is the problem I ran into a couple weeks ago and I’m still trying to get out of. I did a website for this guy a couple months ago. We agreed on a fixed price because it was supposed to be an easy enough job: a nice static layout, not much PHP, a Gallery, etc. A prototype was done in about three days. He was amazed by the quality of the website and had nothing but praise. Everything is good right? Wrong. He now had to burden of supplying content for the website. To make a long story slightly less long, this took a couple of months, and he only supplied pictures for the gallery and content for one of the six pages (not the home page). Now you may be thinking what does that have to do with me if the guy’s website
is empty, he paid for a design and that’s what he got right? Well I would agree with you there, but the problem was he had not yet paid the balance on his bill.

To make matters even more screwy, he passed on the website work to a colleague of his. Any my instructions were “do what ever Jim wants”. I’m like, “fine”. The problem is that Jim wants a whole lot of stuff that wasn’t in the original contract. And Jim knows absolutely nothing about web design or HTML or FTP for that matter. Let’s just say Jim is a classic Front Page guy. So now a web design job has turned into an HTML, FTP server, course because Jim can’t edit the website as he used to. Jim wants to hear nothing about the limitations of Front Page, Jim just knows that “that’s how I edit my other pages”. Fine Jim. At first the site was designed with the structure in PHP and the content to be added as static HTML include files. The only thing Jim would have to do is edit these files to his heart’s content.

Oh no, Jim doesn’t like that, because Jim can’t “see the entire page” when he’s editing. I ensured Jim that whatever changes he made to those files would show up in the big picture. We actually did a short demo. Jim’s response: “Well, I would really prefer it if I could see all he pictures”. *Sigh*, Jim gets what Jim wants right? I redid all the code to static HTML files so that Jim could “see all the pictures”. And of course, since Jim is a Front Page guy, Jim decides to open up one of these files in Front Page, change various styles, move around a couple divs and then saves. Jim then calls me up and asks me why does the site look funny? I said “Jim you screwed it up”. He replies that he only opened it and did nothing and closed it right back again.

So right now I’m wondering whether I should keep trying to work things out with Jim or just take my 50% down payment and cut my losses.

Darren at Problogger.net mentions a change that Chitika is going through right now. After getting some more information from the Chitika support staff I think I understand what they’re going to do. Some of the text links on the ads are going to be converted to static links to the advertiser’s product description. From my understanding the links in the tabs (Best Deals, Search, etc) will still count toward your click through.

They are countering what they call “click curiosity”: people who just click to get information about the product and not are necessarily interested in purchasing. This means a higher turnover to the advertisers of course.

Chitika themselves admitted that there will be a drop in revenue for publisher. They even offer an incentive:

To best compensate for any potential revenue loss, we are issuing a network-wide 10% bonus through the end of November.

Fact of the matter is, we can all expect to see a permanent drop in Chitika revenue due to this change, no doubt about it. From the response I got, this did not seem to be an advertiser initiated change. It seems that Chitika is doing some forward thinking and for-seeing a problem and are taking the necessary steps to avoid it. This is comforting to me. It shows that they are really committed to working out the kinks in their beta product.

I personally don’t see the problem. So the title of the product is not clickable, it hurts a bit but it’s not the end of the world. Consumers are not brain dead, they know what a URL link looks like, if they want to find out more they’ll click. And you can always set the “Best Deals” tab as default. It’s not like the title is still clickable and is unpaid. If we have to be honest with ourselves, we have to admit that there have been a number of curiosity clicks. At the end of the day, you need to keep the advertisers happy. And giving them something they want before they know they want it is a sure way to do so.

Chitika is the latest company to jump on board the whole website advertisement band wagaon, but the difference is they, unlike a lot of others, do it very well.

Here we go: You choose from various sizes of ads and you give it a list of keywords for which the ads will rotate for. They pay every month to your Paypal account as long as you have accumulated more that $10.00. If not, the payment is defered until you make $10.00.

Daren over at Problogger.net says:

I’ve been getting quite a few excited emails from readers who have signed up for the Chitika eMiniMalls that I reviewed last week. There has been a lot of positive feedback so far from those who I’ve referred over to the program with some people earning some significant money from it so far (including ‘Rachel‘). There have also been a few (less) emails from bloggers who have failed to see them as effective.
